ALTHOUGH ACTUAL SALES FIGURES FOR COLUMBIA RECORDS DO NOT EXIST for records made at the time of Sweatman’s tenure as a Columbia artist, it is fortunate that the Columbia files do provide details of the quantities of records shipped to Columbia dealers, which at least provides some clues as to actual sales figures. Newly released records were shipped to dealers approximately one month before their “official” catalog release date and their appearance in the monthly catalog supplements.

To give some meaningful comparison to these figures, in 1920 Bert Williams, then one of Columbia’s top stars and the best-known African American performer of his age, was hitting total shipments of a million records per annum. Sweatman, as can be seen from the table below, was not far behind, with a total of 927,100 shipped records during 1919. (p.187)
