A Persevering People
This chapter describes the strength of Mississippians in the face of death and destruction. Even when government bureaucracies faltered, they stood up and faced the unprecedented calamity that befell them with fortitude and resourcefulness. Despite the wreckage of tens of thousands of homes and businesses, Mississippians retained surprising inner wellsprings of hope and faith, which sustained them on the long road toward recovery.
