This chapter focuses on the many benefits of a cultural study or materialist investigation of William Faulkner, especially on demystifying his works and the man himself. Works of a canonized author have often been treated “as illustrations of the author’s biography ... flying in the face of both the evident discrepancy between most authors’ persons and their texts and also the vast range of public functions cultural production performs.”For a fuller understanding of an author and his or her works, authorship must be considered as multiple and performed within material and semiotic circumstances. Cultural materialism is insistent in its emphasis on the processes through which a text achieves its current estimation.
