This chapter examines the character the Punisher, who first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #129 in 1974, and then later evolved into a post-Vietnam anti-hero determined to right society’s wrongs by eliminating the villains who perpetrated them. It discusses how the Punisher mirrors the iconography and evolution of the Western’s complex protagonist.
