Abstract
This chapter explores the modern adaptations of the Franco-American culture and how the community reconciles their heritage with contemporary life. One way in which heritage adapts is through heritage tourism. The communities open up portions of the culture to tourists in order to fund preservation projects and community-based events that promote and continue their heritage, retaining the most intimate cultural elements for the community. At festivals like the Rendezvous, masking modernity with colonial culture creates a continuous cultural layer, constantly evolving and adapting to contemporary situations. Such festivals or events have also been reorganized according to the modern calendar in hopes of attracting more visitors and increasing the participation of community members. The historical identity serves as a point of reference for these communities to construct a contemporary cultural identity, recreating itself when faced with the identity of the Other.
