This chapter demonstrates the split-screen at work in the 1976 movie, Carrie, while at the same time illuminating the divisions and dualities (good / bad motherhood, feminism and the patriarchy, innocence / shame, and so on) so profoundly displayed in the film's imagery and even in its casting choices. The film itself reveals a breadth of complexity in the actors' relationships with one another and with De Palma himself, adding a biographical dimension to the tensions embedded between the characters in the film, and even—more tantalizingly—between the characters and the audience themselves. The chapter also explores other aspects of the film that echo real life, such as the themes of vulnerable bodies as well as subterfuge and manipulation, which find their reflections in certain instances of De Palma's own life.
