This chapter looks at the musical structure, scales, and chords used by Charley Patton, considering the bluesman's “elementary blues.” In this category belong pieces whose harmonic material is more reduced than in the most widespread classical blues formula, namely the three-chord pattern (3C) with two textual verses (2V). One must keep in mind that the 3C2V pattern produces various canonical forms. The chapter then connects that pattern with the tonal scale using selections from Patton's Yazoo double album.
