This chapter traces the development of Webber’s literary career, which began with poetry writing. Webber’s first known poems were “What of a Night,”“Wisdom Cometh in the Morning,” and “The Jealous Scribe,” which were published in various issues of the Daily Chronicle in January and February 1916. Webber’s novel Those That Be in Bondage (1917) is a transitional piece that inaugurates a realist tradition in West Indian literature that explores the dawning social and political consciousness of a people.
