This chapter describes how the American group became one of the most versatile recording teams in the music industry in early 1968. Chips Moman had established himself as a producer; Dan Penn and Tommy Cogbill were making important contributions to the studio; Wayne Carson, Chips, and Dan were gaining recognition as writers. Chips also had the potential to become one of music’s great bandleaders, on a par with Clinton, Jerry Garcia, Bob Wills, and Duke Ellington.
