This chapter describes Memphis music in the fall of 1967, which was a experiencing a spectacular comeback. Among the studios, there was sense of both respect and competition between American Studios and Stax Records. Stax automatically had a higher profile than American because it was a record label, with the studio and the house band only a part of its magic. While Stax’s product was clearly identifiable as R&B, much of American’s output fell into a gray area between soul and country music, and the industry executives themselves often had no idea how to market the recordings.
