On the Fourth of July weekend in 1948, John Clellon Holmes met four people in New York City who would profoundly change his life: Jay Landesman, Gershon Legman, Jack Kerouac, and Allen Ginsberg. Landesman, an ambitious magazine publisher, was the editor and half-owner of the literary magazine, Neurotica, which had published Holmes’ first short story, “Tea for Two,” in its second issue. Legman, an idealist whose scrutiny was directed at American sexual mores, published sections of his book Love and Death, A Study in Censorship in Neurotica. Aside from Kerouac, Ginsberg became one of Holmes’ lifelong friends.
