This chapter examines recent technological advancements through the lens of modern soap opera directors who are striving to keep abreast of these new developments. Technological advancements have become a double-edged sword for the soaps industry. There are vast image quality improvements: from standard-definition to high-definition (HD) images; diminished costs for higher-speed HD cameras; less need for high-output lighting gear; and more seamless and affordable post-production workflows. But there are dramatically more competitive distribution systems as well. Longtime soap opera dominance over daytime network television audience share is no longer a reality.
