Historian William J. Reynolds on Memories of The Edge of Night
This chapter presents Reynolds’s views on how today’s soaps pale in comparison to the shows of yesteryear, such as CBS/ABC’s The Edge of Night (1956–1984). Reynolds says that soaps in the past, which were just thirty minutes long, told more in-depth stories than today’s hour-long shows. Today’s soap producers also feel compelled to outdo themselves and their competition with large-scale special effects and exotic remote-location shoots.
