This chapter considers the role of “The Audience” in the process of soap opera writers. Thirty years ago, writers had the luxury in daytime of being auteurs—of guiding their own journey and allowing fans to follow. But in the new daytime landscape of falling ratings and desperate scrambles to discover “what works” and “what doesn’t,” more and more writers are turning to The Audience for inspiration.
