This chapter analyzes the many distressing industry changes in the U.S. soap opera landscape. It focuses on the year 2008, examining it in relation to the realities of soap opera budgets, and describes how budget cuts affect every aspect of a daytime drama, from the writing team to the sets. Budget cuts also mean that shows have less time to tape each episode, which is bad for the actors, who no longer have time to rehearse scenes. The condensed schedule also means viewers can forget about seeing fun party scenes and big weddings.
