(p.234) Epilogue
Count Them One by One
Gordon A. Martin
University Press of Mississippi

This chapter presents the author’s account of an incident that occurred during the celebration of the fortieth anniversary of James Meredith’s integration at the University of Mississippi on September 30, 2002 at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library in Boston. During the event, Don Byrd, a white man in his early sixties, stepped up to the microphone and informed the crowd that he had been a potential rioter against James Meredith in the fall of 1962. But he experienced an epiphany after watching John Doar present the case about the need to give black people the right to vote, which fundamentally changed his life; he came that night to give thanks to Doar.
