This chapter focuses on the government’s first witness, Jesse Stegall, an elementary school principal, married, a father, and someone with a lot to lose in publicly seeking to vote in hostile Forrest County. His testimony demonstrated Theron Lynd’s consistent pattern of refusing to permit black applicants to register to vote. It also showed that Stegall was an educated, thoughtful man whose only agenda was to exercise his constitutional right to vote, against all odds.
