Frank Capra

University Press of Mississippi

This chapter focuses on Capra’s activities the Screen Directors Guild (SDG), which he joined in 1937. When he joined the guild, Capra was the most prominent name among Hollywood directors. The prestige he wielded, the honing of his gut-fighting talents through years of involvement in the Academy’s labor negotiations, and the respect he had earned from studio bosses would prove to be powerful assets for the SDC in the climactic period of its fight for recognition.
