This chapter describes the making of the film, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. The film began with a screen story by Lewis R. Foster called “The Gentleman from Montana,” the story of the disillusionment of a wide-eyed idealist after his appointment to the United States Senate. Capra claimed that when he read “The Gentleman from Montana,” he immediately envisioned Jimmy Stewart and Jean Arthur in the leading roles.
