This chapter details the collapse of Capra’s filmmaking career. Factors such as the studios’ shortsightedness, the rise of television, and the climate of political fear that was spreading throughout Hollywood all contributed to the collapse. However, Capra also admitted that it was his own lack of “courage” that finally drove him out of Hollywood. Capra’s film State of the Union is considered a pale reflection of his greatness as a filmmaker, sapped as it was by the same fears and lack of moral commitment that fatally compromise his protagonist, the Republican presidential candidate Grant Matthews.
