This chapter details the family and early years of Andrew Wells Cooper, who was born in Brooklyn on August 21, 1927, and also describes the discrimination against blacks in New York City. In August 1945, Andy Cooper celebrated his eighteenth birthday and earned a plumbing diploma from George Westinghouse Vocational High School. Plumbing was dirty yet well-paid work, but Andy was not interested. He had his sights on other careers, which involved the life of the mind.
