This chapter examines the appeal Mad Men has for critics and viewers alike by focusing on the textual and temporal nature of one scene that has generated much discussion: the “pear scene.” It also considers similar “non-narrative” moments in the HBO police procedural The Wire and FOX’s situation comedy Arrested Development. All three programs illustrate that the particular aesthetic and poetic exemplified by the pear scene are increasingly present across networks, channels, and genres; show how the pear scene inflects the nature of genre; and demonstrate how the pear question influences serial television’s seriality or temporality.
