The Surrogate Mother

(p.22) Chapter 2 The Surrogate Mother
Can Anything Beat White?
Elisabeth Petry
University Press of Mississippi

This chapter focuses on Bertha Ernestine James and her correspondence. Bertha was the eldest child of Willis and Anna Houston James. Anna molded Bertha into a loving woman who nurtured her brothers and sisters, and later her own children and their friends. The letters Bertha received as well as the few of those she wrote paint her as a hard-working, creative woman with a whimsical sense of humor and strong opinions, especially in matters of style and deportment.
