This chapter focuses on Helen James’s correspondence while studying at Atlanta University, starting in fall 1904. Helen faced challenges in her classes in history, freshman English, sociology, and Latin, where she was the only woman in a class of thirty-five boys age thirteen to twenty. She also remained loyal to Hampton, claiming that the university’s grounds, buildings, and students paled in comparison to Hampton.
