This chapter focuses on the history of Kid Ory’s musical career during the period from 1933 to 1973. It explains that even while working as a janitor, Ory’s love for music never faded. He copyrighted several songs beginning in 1940, and was hired by filmmaker and radio host Orson Welles in March 1944, which provided many opportunities for Ory and his band. Ory finally decided to break up his band in 1961 and relaxed into the role of jazz elder statesman. He died of pneumonia on January 23, 1973 at the age of 86.
