This chapter, which discusses the early phases of Kid Ory’s music learning experience during the period from 1897 to 1901, explains that Ory first joined a singing or humming group, and then a group that played homemade instruments. It also discusses Ory’s friendships with Lewis “Chif” and Joseph “Stonewall” Matthews, who would eventually accompany him when he took his band to New Orleans in 1910, and mentions Ory’s harmonizing experience and his organization of public dances.
