This chapter focuses on the history of Kid Ory’s musical career during the period from 1908 to 1910. It explains that Ory’s band was hired to play on advertising wagons and for dances at Lincoln Park, and that it was the park manager Bartley who gave Ory the name “Kid.” The chapter discusses the instruments played by Ory for the band and the different names of his band, which included Ory’s Brown Skin Band or Ory’s Brown Skinned Babies. The band’s final name, Woodland Band, was influenced by Ory’s future wife Barbara GaNung.
