This chapter focuses on the history of Kid Ory’s musical career during the period from 1917 to 1919. It explains that by 1917, Ory’s band was already a successful and sought-after band, and that that helped refined a style of playing called soft ragtime, which would later be called jazz. The chapter discusses the role of Louis Armstrong and Joe “King” Oliver in cementing the reputation of Ory’s band, and also highlights Ory’s decision to move his family to California in August 1919.
