Opening with a discussion prompted by Steffen Hantke’s stimulating introduction to American Horror Film (2010), the introduction takes up Laurent Jullier’s argument (2002) that judging a film entails establishing one’s set of criteria before assessing the quality of a film. This is followed by a brief overview of the phenomenon of horror movie remakes in the 2000s, notably the production and marketing strategies involved, then by a discussion of the typology of remakes and an analysis of the pragmatic relationship between the original and the remake, which owe a lot to the work of Thomas Leitch and Constantine Verevis.
