Surviving Voices and the Search for Europe

(p.57) Chapter Two Surviving Voices and the Search for Europe
Fred Zinnemann and the Cinema of Resistance
J. E. Smyth
University Press of Mississippi

This chapter covers Zinnemann's intense personal involvement in a European production about child Holocaust survivors. Zinnemann abandoned a safe Hollywood career to be the first filmmaker allowed inside occupied Germany in 1946-47, and interviewed and cast hundreds of the United Nation's displaced children in The Search. Working closely with Montgomery Clift and Czech child actor Ivan Jandl, Zinnemann created his most personal film and one which would define his career and involvement in Europe's tragic twentieth century.
