Piracy has figured prominently in Vietnam’s comics history. At times during Vietnam’s post–World War II tumultuous history, comics were used for propaganda purposes. Manga have played a role recently, leading to cries for the development of a local industry. Some companies of late have tried to produce comics more representative of Vietnamese society with limited success. This chapter also describe the two largest comic book publishers today – Kim Dong Publishing House and Tuoi Tre Publishing House. Impairment of the prefession is discussed, issues such as government policies, lack of professional training, and prevalent piracy, as are newspaper cartoons and comic strips, and humor magazines.
