Included in this chapter is discussion about cartooning beginnings in what was then part of India by pioneer artist Kazi Abul Kasem and description of the origins of comic books and cartoon magazines by the editors who started them. As in a number of instances cited in other chapters, the lengths to which comics people went for the fulfilment of their dreams are amazing. Mohd. Harun-Or-Rashid borrowed money, purchased pearls and then sold them at a huge profit in Bangkok so that he could start his Cartoon Magazine. The chapter brings the story of comic art to the present with accounts of the popular strip “Tokai,” the country’s first comics shop, new publishers, educational comics, and professional efforts.

Keywords:   Political cartoons, humor magazines, comic strip, “Tokai,” Unmad
