Humorous cartoons and magazines are especially popular during the annual Gaijatra (Cow’s) festival, as well as comic strips, comic books, and humor magazines. Social consiciousness-raising comics have been published in Nepal, and a humor society, HaSaNe, has been operative for years. In recent years, a few Internet comics have surfaced. With the swelling of numbers of newspapers by 2000, the ranks of the cartooning profession increased dramatically. Issues and problems discussed are feelings of jealousy among cartoonists, plagiarism, lack of training and press freedom, and the changing political landscape.
