This chapter examines the parallels between the film, Phantom of the Paradise (1974), and De Palma's own experiences with Hollywood. De Palma has described this film as having been “motivated by my own experiences, going into big buildings, bringing in your own material that nobody pays any attention to or rips off in one way or another.” We recall that when De Palma first went to Hollywood as a young director to make Get to Know Your Rabbit (1972), he felt lied to and manipulated, eventually having that film “stolen” from him and “mangled” by the studios, who recut it in a way that they thought would be more commercial. Hence, with Phantom of the Paradise, De Palma put his own experience as a maker of movies into the movie.
