This chapter analyzes the failure of Students for a Democratic Society (SDS). It discusses the SDS’s failure to transcend its society’s notions of race, of gender, and of nation; its failure to deal with its male supremacy; and the New Left’s inability to break definitively with empire. It argues that the New Left’s young white activists did not realize that although the price of the liberation was high, the price they paid for their privilege was infinitely higher.
