This chapter focuses on the history of the guitar in America before 1880. It discusses Philip Gura’s survey of the guitar in early nineteenth-century America and the role of the guitar in the newly created chamber ensembles. The chapter also explains how the redefined and reconfigured guitar produced new music, assumed new roles, and represented new cultural values, all of which remain with us today, and considers the role of the continuity of musical tools and language in the history of the guitar.
