This chapter, which focuses on the transition of the guitar from the parlor to concert halls in America during the early part of the twentieth century, explains that the fate of the guitar was tied to the conventional attitudes and to the creation of new ensembles featuring America’s newest favorite instrument—the mandolin. It highlights the replacement of the banjo by the mandolin as the primary instrument in the banjo, mandolin, and guitar (BMG) ensembles, and the conflict between guitarists and the BMG leadership.
