This chapter discusses the impact of the demise of the Pillowtex textile company in Kannapolis, North Carolina. It explains that an average Pillowtex employee was aged 46, with 13 years of service. Most of these employees were not properly trained to work anywhere else, and a great number of them even had no health insurance. So when the textile company closed, a significant number of workers had no other place to go, and those who were lucky enough to get a job suffered a 40 percent drop in income.
