Your Heritage Will Still Remain

This chapter explores the impact and effect of the sectional crisis on Mississippians’ collective identity as Americans. Despite external threats that challenged the slave system, and hence, the institution around which much of their social identity rested, Mississippians tended to champion the banner of constitutionalism and their shared heritage within the United States. Mississippians continued to defend the institution of slavery and their agriculturally-based society, but did so from the vantage point as true inheritors of the Founders’ revolutionary legacy. Mississippians reacted to the sectional conflict by branding northerners as traitors to their shared heritage as Americans.
