This essay explores strategies for, --and the potential pedagogical benefits of--teaching Welty’s The Golden Apples in a junior-level class on Anglo-American literary modernism. Welty did not see the early twentieth century south as isolated or resistant to modernity. Rather, she deploys modernist experimental aesthetic techniques to explore the “disembedding” processes of social modernization – including the rise of consumerism and mass culture, and the emergence of new communication and transportation technologies and new media--as they unfold in the specific regional context of her fictional Morgana, Mississippi. Outlining classroom exercises and assignments designed to help students recognize Welty’s often appreciative engagement with historically specific forms of modernity and mass culture, the essay shows how reading The Golden Apples alongside other major modernist works can facilitate a richer appreciation of her work, even as it revises dominant accounts of modernism as primarily a response to urban modernity.
