Transnational reading pushes us into the less familiar, less stable ground and makes us alert to how we are similar rather than how we are different. Eudora Welty’s fiction when read intertextually with the fictions by other women writers, black and white, from South Africa and the U.S. South demonstrates that her writing transcends time across time and space and that literature not only matters, but is essential. This essay is a reading of Welty’s “A Worn Path” and “Where Is the Voice Coming From?” alongside South African Nadine Gordimer’s “Is There Nowhere Else Where We Can Meet” and Sindiwe Magona’s “Two Little Girls and a City.”
