(p.175) “I Was Born in Arkansas and Raised Up in Chicago”
Charley Patton

Luther Allison

University Press of Mississippi

This chapter provides a powerful narrative, which grounds the origins of both Charley Patton's and his own blues in “the idea of taking a broom wire and a brick and bottle” to create a one-strand instrument that virtually every Delta blues artist—including B.B. King—played as a child. That experience was the first musical step for blues artists. The chapter then details Luther Allison's first musical inspiration during his childhood in Arkansas as well as his life growing up in Chicago. Allison recalled that when he lived “in the country, you hear the crickets at night and the mosquitoes singing, and my dad and my mother would come home and sit out till dark just singing hymns.”
