Greek Music in America

Anna Caraveli

University Press of Mississippi

Long-time Baltimore resident Anna Caraveli not only unraveled the complex of social and musical forms and their meanings in the city’s Karpathian diaspora community, but she also journeyed multiple times to Olymbos, Karpathos—widely believed to be one of the most traditional villages remaining in Greece. There she documented the effect of the diaspora on the practice of their traditions. Although the pieces on which “Communities Born in Song” were based were published originally in 1985, her work remains an outstanding ethnographic study on transnational musical bonds.

Keywords:   Olymbos, Karpathos, Greek diaspora, Greek music, Baltimore Greek community, Transnational musical traditions
