Zanuck, Balaban, and the Wild Finish
Zanuck, Balaban, and the Wild Finish
This chapter focuses on the brief testimonies of James G Stahlman of the Nashville Banner, Darryl F. Zanuck of 20th Century Fox, and Barney Balaban of Paramount Pictures. Knowing the xenophobic slant of certain senators on the committee, Zanuck paraded out his born in the USA credentials to the embarrassment of Nye and others. These testimonies were quick, and ended with Senator Tobey’s final desperate attempt to discredit Hollywood. Tobey had two “smoking gun” witnesses, one was his secretary and another was his neighbour. The statements were so poorly executed that Senator McFarland walked out.
