The this chapter is an introduction to The Green Depression: American Ecoliterature in the 1930s and 1940s. It outlines the contents of each chapter and highlights the contributions the author hopes to make. To show the reach of environmental thinking during the period, the first three chapters in The Green Depression focus on wilderness, rural, and urban landscapes. The fourth chapter shifts away from geographical landscapes to focus on debates over technology during the period.
