¡Viva La Historieta!

Bruce Campbell

University Press of Mississippi

This chapter examines El Libro Vaquero, a profit-driven, formulaic treatment of the American “Wild West,” pitting broad-chested, square-jawed gunslingers and buxom women against corrupt and menacing villains in the western frontier states of the late-nineteenth-century United States. El Libro Vaquero was chosen by the Fox administration’s Ministry of Foreign Relations as a strategic vehicle for diffusion of an official appeal precisely to Mexican migrants’ sense of transnational reality.
