A Luks Biography
The Context of His Graphic Art
This chapter begins the exploration of the roots of renowned artist George Benjamin Luks by citing the February 1908 exhibition at the Macbeth Gallery in New York City, where eight artists rebelled against the National Academy of Design’s bias in favor of landscapes, portraits, or historical themes. Among these eight artists was George Benjamin Luks himself. The chapter introduces the character and background of Luks, an original artist whose book illustrations, newspaper work, and journal sketches span four decades, works that had later informed and inspired his painting. His graphic art is perceived as providing a sometimes unscripted, sometimes biased, often humorous, and always revealing portrayal of the concerns and preoccupations of urban Americans from the Gilded Age and all throughout the Roaring Twenties. This chapter takes a closer look at his character and upbringing, his family, and his childhood.
