This chapter focuses on Richard Dyer-Bennet’s decision to found Dyer-Bennet Records together with partner Harvey Cort, a television director and producer from New York, and explains that Dyer-Bennet was motivated to start his own label because of his dissatisfaction with the standard of his commercially produced music recordings. The record company’s first album was Richard Dyer-Bennet 1, recorded in 1955 with Rudy van Gelder serving as recording engineer.
