University Press of Mississippi

This chapter focuses on Richard Dyer-Bennet’s attempt to produce a recording of American poet Robert Fitzgerald’s translation of Homer’s Odyssey. It explains that Dyer-Bennet initially performed a fifteen-minute reading from the epic at the conclusion of a folk song performance at Stony Brook in 1977 and was encouraged by a Stony Brook professor to record the epic. He was able to obtain the permission of Fitzgerald and a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, but the project was not completed because of poor health and funding problems.
