Chapter 14 Early Departures and Late Arrivals
Memphis Boys

Roben Jones

University Press of Mississippi

This chapter focuses on the studio’s continued success. The studio had earned the respect of its peers while the client roster was becoming more distinguished, especially among the R&B accounts. Another indication of success was that they were seldom off the charts, having both R&B and pop hits; if country radio had not been so restrictive at the time they likely would have crossed over into that format as well. The chapter also describes the departure of Dan Penn and Spooner Oldham.
